Desperate Asian women faking virginity in Britain

Posted by 498A_Crusader on March 4, 2008

London, March 4 (IANS) Some Asian women in Britain are going to great lengths to fake their virginity, driven to desperation by concepts of ‘honour’ in a community where myths about their first sexual experience is still widely held, an Asian radio station reported.

If found to have sex before marriage, the lives of some young Asian women can be at risk and they can be driven away from their homes, experts and community workers told the BBC Asian Network documentary “Like a Virgin”, broadcast Monday.

As a result, desperate young women are using fake blood and even going in for reconstructive surgery to fake their virginity, the investigative radio documentary reported.

In an echo of social attitudes held in many parts of the Indian subcontinent, the programme found that most of the 17 to 21 year old men interviewed in the region of West Midlands – home to a large number of Asians – preferred women to be virgins at marriage.

Concepts of ‘izzat’ – or honour – are strongly held among some conservative Asian communities in Britain and have been linked not only to the practice of forced marriage but also, in some cases, the murder of young women.

An adviser formerly with the national sexual health charity Brook said she personally received requests for information on faking virginity on a daily basis from young Asian women – and that she provided the information because she feared for the safety of these women.

She said: “They would sometimes come in to the centre because they were concerned about the fact that maybe they had had unprotected sex with a boyfriend and they were concerned about whether other men would know they had had sex before and were not a virgin.

“The discussions would then go around some of the myths around virginity… that girls bleed on the first time of having sexual intercourse. So we were able to say, ‘lots of girls don’t’.

“The problem is that lots of men and lots of people within the (Asian) community believe that that is true, and therefore they (young women) are very concerned that they will get married and they won’t bleed and their husband will believe they weren’t a virgin at marriage and all the problems that that would cause them in life.”

She said women were using red dye and mock blood that can be bought from novelty shops that they inserted into their vaginas or spread on the bed sheet after having sex. One Pakistani woman said she knew someone who had used a bottle of red ink – and got away with it. “Her mother-in-law was very happy,” said the woman.

Underlining the seriousness of the issue, the adviser said she agreed to provide information on how to fake virginity because “for some young women the risks to them and their personal safety were so great that if they were not able to fake it then the consequences could have been dire.”"

A community worker who works with young Asians in west London said some girls have had to flee their homes and go into shelter “because their life is on the line. Somebody may have found out”.

Linda Cardozo, a gynaecologist at Kings College Hospital in London, said some desperate Asian women were seeking reconstructive hymen-repair surgery, but that it was “quite difficult to achieve” the repair because there may not always be enough tissues to bring together.

In any case, there was no guarantee that the woman would bleed.

“The main aim of hymen repair is to bleed on wedding night, but of course there are many women who don’t bleed on their wedding night, whether they are virgins or not.

“This is because the hymen may be very stretchy, they may have used tampons for menstruation, they may have had lot of exercise and subtle tissues and therefore there are many women who have their first intercourse without bleeding at all.

“So there’s no guarantee these women will achieve the aim they set out to achieve,” the doctor added.

Although some 24 such repairs had been performed in the state health sector, the vast majority of such surgeries are thought to take place in the private sector, which each surgery costs between 1,500 and 2,000 pounds. ($3,000-4,000)

I am a slave to my wife: Rajat Kapoor

Posted by 498A_Crusader on February 23, 2008

New Delhi, Feb 23 (IANS) Bollywood director-actor Rajat Kapoor says women might play ornamental roles in reel life but they are more powerful than men in real life.

“As far as Indian cinema is concerned actresses are still considered decorative while heroes take the cake. However, in real life and specially in relationships, women are more powerful than men,” said the actor who often dons the mantle of director too.

“A woman keeps a family or any relationship intact. In my home I am a slave to my wife (Meenal) and daughter (Rabia),” Rajat told IANS.

Audiences have heaped praise on the multifaceted star for his latest directorial venture “Mithya”, which stars Ranvir Shorey, Neha Dhupia and Naseeruddin Shah.

His stint in Bollywood started as a director with “Tarana”. Soon critical acclaim followed with “Raghu Romeo” and “Mixed Doubles”.

He has no commercial hits to his name yet and most of his films target a niche audience, but he is unfazed.

“I have a certain sensibility and I make films in accordance with that. I am not interested in making an ‘Om Shanti Om’ because it does nothing for me. When I watch it, I am bored.”

As an actor, he started his career with telefilms and television serials. The talented star forayed into big-time acting with the blockbuster “Dil Chahta Hai”. Rajat’s performance was largely appreciated in “Corporate”, “Bheja Fry” and “Khoya Khoya Chand”.

Currently, the actor is hosting a celebrity chat show on entertainment and lifestyle TV channel NDTV Good Times and National Geographic’s quiz show “Lufthansa Nat Geo Genius”.

However, he resists any plans of acting in soap operas or making them.

“I am not interested in doing television serials. Selling serious content is difficult through daily soaps. Trivialisation of news and TV is going on worldwide and one can’t fight it.

“Moreover, one can’t make a good serial because the economics of the small screen are so bizarre.”

Rajat’s forthcoming films include “I am 24″, “Halla” and “Raat Gayi Baat Gayi”.

A fight with your spouse could be good for health: study

Posted by 498A_Crusader on January 24, 2008

A good fight with your spouse could be good for the health, a new study has found.

Couples who suppressed their anger have a mortality rate twice as high as those in which at least one partner stands up for themselves, according to the study which tracked 192 US couples for 17 years.

“When couples get together, one of their main jobs is reconciliation about conflict,” said lead author Ernest Harburg, an emeritus professor with the University of Michigan.

“The key matter is, when the conflict happens, how do you resolve it?” he said.

“When you don’t, if you bury your anger, and you brood on it and you resent the other person or the attacker, and you don’t try to resolve the problem, then you’re in trouble.”

Previous studies have shown that suppressing anger increases stress-related illnesses like heart disease and high blood pressure.

This study looks at how suppressed anger and the resulting buildup of resentment in a marriage affects overall mortality rates.

It adjusted for age, smoking, weight, blood pressure, bronchial problems, breathing, and cardiovascular risk.

Harburg and his colleagues used a questionnaire to determine how the spouses responded to behaviour that they perceived as unfair.

Both spouses suppressed their anger in 26 of the couples while at least one spouse expressed their anger in the remaining 166 couples.

At least one death was recorded in half the couples who suppressed their anger, whereas only 26 percent of the other couples suffered from the death of a spouse.

And the anger-supressing couples were nearly five times more likely to both be dead 17 years later, the study found.

Harburg cautioned that the results are still preliminary and do not constitute a representative sample of current marital relationships.

The study period covers couples interviewed in 1971 and measures survival through 1988.

It was carried out in a small, predominantly white and middle class town in Michigan and most of the women were “housewives” born before the sexual revolution.

An upcoming analysis of survival rates 30 years later will yield more reliable results, Harburg said.

The paper will appear in the January edition of the Journal of Family Communication.

Same sex couples more likely to have satisfying marital and family relations

Posted by 498A_Crusader on January 13, 2008

Gay and lesbian couples are more likely to have satisfying marital and family relations than straight couples, says a leading researcher in both family issues and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) relationships.

Robert-Jay Green, executive director of the Rockway Institute which is affiliated with the California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University, says that gay and lesbian couples appear to be better than straight couples in respect of two key factors that promote healthier relationships – flexibility about gender roles and equal division of parenting and household tasks.

“It all comes down to greater equality in the relationship. Research shows that lesbian and gay couples – by virtue of being composed of two partners of the same gender – have a head start in escaping the traditional gender role divisions that make for power imbalances and dissatisfaction in many heterosexual relationships,” says Green.

In a series of studies that Green conducted with Michael Bettinger and Ellis Zacks, lesbian couples were found to be emotionally closer than gay male couples, who in turn were found to be emotionally closer than heterosexual married couples.

The research also showed that lesbian and gay couples tended to be dramatically more flexible in the way they handled rules and roles in the relationship, for they avoided the traditional division of labour and division of expressive versus instrumental roles toward which heterosexual couple typically evolve over time despite their best intentions, especially after the birth of children.

Other research on parenting also found significant advantages for same-sex couples. In three separate studies, it was found that lesbian partners tended to share parenting and household responsibilities more equally, besides being more satisfied with this division of labour.

In heterosexual dual-career families, on the other hand, mothers often did much more childcare and housework compared to fathers, regardless of equal hours spent at work, an imbalance that often leads to resentment over time.

All of these family researchers concluded that the freedom to defy traditional gender-linked parenting roles helped gay men and lesbians take good just as good care of their children yet preserve greater feelings of fairness in their couple relationships compared to heterosexuals.

“Our research found that the most successful couples demonstrate closeness and flexibility. We found high levels of both characteristics in 79 percent of lesbian couples, 56 percent of gay male couples, but in only 8 percent of heterosexual married couples. Clearly, the more egalitarian approach taken by same-sex couples is an advantage that could benefit straight couples too,” said Green. (ANI)

Indian armed forces have 6,180 HIV/AIDS patients

Posted by 498A_Crusader on December 31, 2007

New Delhi, Dec 30: Every day at least one member of the Indian armed forces is being detected with HIV/AIDS.

“Every month we are getting 30 to 40 HIV/AIDS cases among our personnel. Currently we have 6,180 HIV/AIDS patients among our ranks, but the infection rate is lower than in civilians,” Lieutenant-General Yogendra Singh, director general of the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS), said here Saturday.

This year alone (by the end of November), 323 personnel of the three armed forces – army, navy and air force – have been detected with the HIV/AIDS. In 2006, health authorities had found 409 HIV positive cases among the armed forces.

“We (the armed forces) have a strength of around 1.5 million. There are mainly two ways through which these people are getting infected – unsafe sex and injectible drug use. We have 10 centres across the country to treat such personnel,” Singh told reporters.

Asked if the services of these personnel are terminated, he said: “There are four stages of the disease. If someone is in the fourth stage and not eligible to serve the country, then his job is terminated, but the rest get treatment and continue in the service.”

Singh said all those who are HIV positive are not in the last stage. “Maybe, around two percent of these personnel are in the last stage.”

Lieutenant-General Saibal Mukherjee, Director General of Medical Services (Army), said that the armed forces had reported 461 cases of HIV/AIDS in 2005 and 475 in 2004.

“We are carrying out a massive information, education and communication campaign among our personnel, and have certainly achieved success. The trend is decreasing,” Mukherjee told IANS.

According to officials, the AFMS has undertaken many research projects that include improved diagnostics and treatment, and control modalities for tropical disease and HIV/AIDS.

“There are 10 immunodeficiency centres that are responsible for providing latest treatment to these patients,” Mukherjee added.

India is home to 2.5 million HIV/AID patients, including 80,000 children below the age of 14.

Nine more armed forces hospitals are coming across the country and plans are afoot to induct 10,590 new health professionals to meet growing health demands and reduce doctors and patients ratio in the defence service.

Currently, there were 127 armed forces hospitals and scores of ambulances with emergency medical facilities attached to them.

Soon to be released: Sexual Harrasment at workplace, 2007.
Yet to Come: Marital Rape 2008

Critics: The NCW, CSR and WCD banners combine has produces so many
movies but all flops. This time also they are releasing more movies but again with the same flop actors? How much a spectator will be amused to see the same failed actors having a pathetic track record?

In India, in the last 50 years, a number of legislations were enacted to empower an Indian woman and curb the crime against women. But as the govt. record iitself are showing all acts failed to serve the purpose they were enacted for. Why?

From time to time it has been acknowledged by social activists, police, politicians and women organizations that it is not the failure of law but it is the implementation of the law which fails every time. Why the Govt. or NGOs working for empowerment of women are not working for right and easy implementation of these acts. Why the such NGOs or ministry refrain themselves from conducting a study on socio-economic conditions which led to non-reporting of crimes against women? The fact is that the actors of these so called films, i mean the people who are responsible for the implementation and execution of these acts are not properly sensitized intead they misuse these laws to harras and extort the poor/rural/illiterate women. This is pretty evident from the daily news of cases of
Gang rapes on the order of panchayats,
Sati cases,
Fatwas by local maulvis,
Rape victims being forced to marry the rapist,
Death sentences by local community courts in the elopment cases or
Out of cast marriages,
Witchcraft, etc.
What all these tehsildar, naib tehsildars, block development officers, dowry prohibition officers have been doing all the while for so many years?Illiterate and unpriviledged are not even dare to come to the courts for any kind of relef. On the other hand women in urban areas are misusing such laws encated to protect the women for the extortion of money, hiding adultery, to settle socres with in-laws etc. Now, the new film has been released, Domestic violence (protection) Act, 2005, and the cast is the same.
But this time its different !!
Yes the script is also a flop this time as its already been called by the film jury as “clumsily drafted”.
Breaking news : CHOLIwood Planing to send some of its team to USA for farther Re-search with VAM,VOW, to make brand new titles like
No custody for Father;

Women always treat men like ATM’s

Posted by 498A_Crusader on December 19, 2007

By Marty Nemko

I so often see this syndrome in my female clients: She comes in ostensibly wanting a career but finds an objection to every option, except going back to school, which defers having to work. Or she’s done as much school as she can possibly justify, agrees that a particular career goal is appropriate, but refuses to do the work necessary to land a job.

When I ask, “Do you really want to work?,” most say no. So often, they’ll admit that what they’d really love is a man to support them so they can stay home—even if no children are involved.

One of my clients, a 20-something project coordinator for Sun Microsystems said, “If I could, I’d stay home in a minute. And that’s true for all of my (female) friends.”I was amazed by one of my clients, a recent graduate of a prestigious college who fit that profile perfectly, saying she’d love to meet a husband who made enough money that she could be a full-time housewife. What amazed me was that she said her most deeply held value is that women are constantly oppressed.

I had thought the era of gold diggers ended in the ‘60s with the women’s movement. But I’m here to say that from where I sit, it’s still alive and well. Perhaps today’s women, seeing their mothers not so happy in the workplace makes them decide they’d rather stay home and have a man support them, if they can find one.

My anecdotal experience is supported by others. For example, Time, 60 Minutes, and the New York Times Sunday Magazine all did major features on today’s women not wanting to work. Often cited, for example, was a study of Stanford MBAs. 95 % of the men were working full time while only 38% of the women were. In their book What Women Really Want, pollsters Celinda Lake, a Democrat, and Kellyanne Conway, a Republican, found that seven in 10 women say they would stay home with their kids if they could afford it.

I’m surprised that so many guys don’t mind being the sole breadwinner. Many of them, however, change their minds when I say this to them:

Today, it typically requires two incomes for a family to own a home and support a solid middle class lifestyle. If the wife refuses to work and especially if she pushes hard to own a home, have children, and spend heavily on clothes, jewelry, spas, going back to college, vacations, etc., it means that the man must try to find a very high-income job. Those jobs are very difficult to land and, once obtained, typically demand long, stress-filled, often unrewarding hours, for example as corporate lawyers, bond traders, insurance salesmen, or executives in which pressure to generate profit is high and the power to implement change is low.

Meanwhile, the wife gets a far more pleasurable existence, even when she has children to raise. Evidence it’s more pleasurable: In studies in which men who work outside the home offer to switch roles with their stay-at-home wives, most women refuse.

Finally, remember that men die much younger than women, with stress being a major killer. Do you really want to be a beast of burden so your wife can live a cushy life, and then after you die, inherit the money you’ve earned so she can continue her lifestyle?

Even after my lecturette, some men say they’re happy to be the sole breadwinner, but more say the lecturette opened their eyes—they agree that they would have more rewarding, less stressful career options and, overall, better lives if their wives contributed significantly to the family income. Most of the men say they will talk with their wives about it, but when they return for their next session, they usually report that their wife pulled out all the stops to avoid having to work: they cried, yelled, guilt-tripped, or avoided talking about it—anything but look for work.

These women use various excuses to avoid working, most commonly:

It’s better for the children. In fact, the data is equivocal about that. And anecdotally, I’ve seenmany examples in which a stay-at-home mom overprotects a child, resulting in a less self-confident child than if the child were in a high-quality child-care program.

I don’t have earning potential. The definitive book on the subject, Why Men Earn More by Dr. Warren Farrell (Amacom, 2005) finds that for the same work, in many fields, women earn more than $1 for each dollar men earn. Even low-skill-required jobs such as waitressing can yield $50,000-$100,000 a year.

Men, I urge you to be more conscious about whether you are allowing yourself to be turned into being a beast of burden to pay for the expensive house, kids, and all the material “stuff” that you might well be willing to trade away for a more pleasant life.

And if you’re single, consider whether your life will be better if you hold out for a woman who will share responsibility for the family income. Besides, by requiring that, you’ll know that the woman wants to be with you because she loves you, not because—as a surprising number of my female clients have admitted in the privacy of my office–that she considers you a cash cow.

Florida woman has 10 husbands, charges say

Posted by 498A_Crusader on December 17, 2007

MIAMI – The honeymoons are over for a 26-year-old woman who authorities say has at least 10 husbands.

Eunice Lopez has been charged with bigamy, accused of marrying 10 men between 2002 and 2006 without divorcing any of them, federal immigration authorities say. The Miami Herald reported Saturday that a records search by the newspaper found seven additional marriages under the bride’s name and birth date.

Lopez arrived in South Florida from Cuba in 2002 and was a legal U.S. resident.

“I can tell you that none of the individuals she married had any type of residency,” said Terry Chavez, a spokesman for the Miami-Dade office of the state attorney.

Prosecutors say she charged her husbands an unspecified amount to help them secure immigration status and continued asking the men for money long after the wedding, threatening to expose them if they didn’t pay.

Chavez said the state attorney’s office began investigating after being tipped off by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Lopez was released on $18,000 bond. Her last known address was in Hialeah, just north of Miami. A telephone listing for her could not be located, and it was not known whether she had an attorney.

Scientists develop intelligent bra for women

Posted by 498A_Crusader on December 13, 2007

London, Dec 10 (PTI) Can’t go for jogging thinking that jiggling could cause saggy breasts? Well, ladies stop worrying — scientists have come up with a solution, it is the ‘intelligent’ bra.
The scientists at the University of Wollongong in Australia have developed one such bra using a revolutionary fabric containing sensors to control the movement of breasts while exercising, ‘The Daily Telegraph’ reported today.

“A consequence of current bra design is that the brassiere straps bear much of the load generated by breast momentum during physical activity. As breast mass increases, bounce momentum increases, placing large loads on the straps and, in turn, excessive pressure on the wearer’s shoulders.

“Apart from strap-related pain, many females, particularly large-breasted women are restricted from participating in physical activity due to exercise-induced breast pain associated with excessive vertical breast displacement,” the researchers said.

According to the researchers, the new bra could help manufacturers produce more comfortable and wobble-free under-wears for women.

They have already tested the fabric on two women, aged 30 and 39, with size 36D and 38DD bra sizes respectively, as they walked on a treadmill at four mph and jogged at six mph.

Movement of the chest during walking ranged from 0.4 inches to almost one inch. But when they ran, the larger woman’s chest moved by up to 2.7 inches compared to smaller woman’s which moved up to 2.1 inch, the researchers found.

“Our results show that the fabric sensors are suitable to monitor breast motion and brassiere function. Brassiere designers will have the ability directly to assess the effects of changes to each brassiere component,” the researchers said.

Mens wealth, not looks, key for marriage

Posted by 498A_Crusader on December 13, 2007

London, Dec 12 (PTI) Planning to settle down? Pester your boss for a pay hike because it is your income and wealth which your prospective better half would be looking at before tying the knot.
A team of international researchers has carried out a study and found that a man’s riches, and not his looks, are the most important if he wants to get married, ‘The Daily Telegraph’ reported today.

Although there have been many lab based studies that have suggested that women are drawn to men of high status, power and wealth, rather than just looks, this new study has provided hard evidence of the marriage market in action.

The researchers came to the conclusion after analysing a survey of more than 20,000 American men, based on historical data collected in 1910 — which suggested how when males were in short supply, for instance in the wake of the World War I, women’re happy to put up with poorer partners.

And when men were commonplace, women’re in the driving seat and became correspondingly more choosy, driving a bargain for the richest and most powerful men, with the marriage prospects of a male pauper being “drastically reduced”.

“Little research within evolutionary psychology, so far, has considered how the market influences individual decisions. Here we show that if men are abundant, this will influence the market value of their desired traits, that is, women can demand more.

“This aspect, namely individual decision making as a function of the mating market (local abundance or scarcity), has been relatively neglected within the literature on human mate choice,” lead researcher Thomas Pollet of the Newcastle University was quoted as saying.

China is Better than India

Posted by 498A_Crusader on December 13, 2007

Have you ever wondered why China is so much further ahead of India in economic development? The Chinese cant speak English properly, China is a Communist country, yet flourishes like a democracy. China has superior infrastructure. Don’t tell me China doesn’t have corruption or she treats her people fair, she doesn’t.

India on the other hand has superior command of any knowledge based subject, examples, English, higher educational institutions, etc.India is the worlds largest democracy, her legal system is based on English law. India has some very powerful industrialists, eg. Tata’s, Ambani’s, etc. Yet India still has some of the worst infrastructure, just take a look at her roads, and airports. Bottom line India is still, hang on to your hats, a good twenty five years behind countrieslike Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia. Only countries that are behind India are Cambodia and Vietnam, but they too are going to catch up fast.

Now coming to head on freedom of these countries citizens. Yes  China is still a communist country, and her citizens have no freedom of speech etc, India has freedom of speech. But China doesn’t castrate her average male with Feminist laws like 498a and DV act. India on the other hand publicly castrates her male citizens, and spends more time being non productive. How can a Nation be productive if she make Eunuchs of her citizens? Just look at how much time and effort is wasted with these draconian laws? India now has a new industry, its called 498a and DV, India can start advertising to get other countries to start off shoring Matrimonial issues to her, and basically bring all the Males and Castrate them. 498a and DV is a Threat to Indian Civilization, if Indians havent figured this out by now may god help them.

Some Examples :

China Dare to face World Super Power and VETO against anyone at UNO.

China nerver listen to any so called Super Powers.

Dare to make Business with IRAN / Sudan and other countries when world powers says NO.

How many Medals india won in Olympics compare to China, China comes TOP 5;

At the Time Famine or Flood China never beg to western Countries.

China Never Involve in other countries Political issue.

Chinas Products are all over world, superior quality for the Price.

World ask Israel, why they occupaid Palestine, but none dare to ask why China they are in TIBET or Kashmeir.

There is human rights violation / child labour / no media Freedom / corruption in China, but they do not make GENDER BIASED LAWS like Dowry or DV to break Families

Judge loses job, fined Rs 10,000 for abusing HC

Truth About Dowry Law and Its Misuse << Click here

New Delhi: Judicial etiquette forms an integral part of a judge’s official dealing. Deviation from this by abusing the Bombay High Court, coupled with his errant behaviour, has cost a Maharashtra lower court judge his job besides making him poorer by Rs 10,000.

The SC on Tuesday upheld the HC’s decision to terminate N G Vaze from the Maharashtra Judicial Service and in addition asked him to pay litigation cost of Rs 10,000 to the state government which successfully opposed his plea in SC.

The HC had dismissed him after an inquiry found him guilty of using intemperate language against the high court for transferring him, besides harassing members of the Bar, litigants and even members of the staff. Vaze argued his case before the apex court all by himself challenging the termination order.

Rejecting his plea, a Bench comprising Justices S B Sinha and H S Bedi objected to the intemperate language used by Vaze and said, “It is expected that a judicial officer would use such language which behoves a judicial officer.” “Most of the charges levelled against Vaze were in relation to use of intemperate language in his representations. He even in his representation to the second show cause notice had used such language, which in our opinion does not behove a judicial officer,” the Bench said.

It said independence and objectivity on the part of a judicial officer was always welcome, but this would not mean that a judicial officer was free to use abusive or intemperate language against the HC.

HYDERABAD: An Australian woman, who married a person from the city a few years ago, lodged a complaint with the police on Saturday against her husband and mother-in-law alleging dowry harassment.

The family, however, refuted the charges and claimed they had returned most of the money taken from the Australian woman.

Vanasthalipuram police said Mario Franklin Campbell, 32, went to Australia to pursue his education in 2002. During his stay in Sydney, he fell in love with an Australian woman Samantha Jani Sevel, 30, and they got married.

Campbell, however, returned to the city alone a few years ago. Samantha, who arrived in the city 10 days back, lodged a police complaint on Saturday alleging that her husband and mother-in-law Shaila Desai were harassing her physically and mentally. She had given them 50,000 Australian dollars, she claimed.

Samantha also alleged that her husband was trying to get married again. Police reportedly took Campbell into custody and are investigating.

Campbell’s mother, Desai, is a retired gazetted officer. Police registered a case under Sec 498 (A) dowry harassment and are investigating.

Muslim vet ostracised for sheltering pigs

Posted by 498A_Crusader on November 3, 2007

//Law to Protect animals in India, but None for Men….! Phir bi Mera bharath Mahaan…?a

Patna, Nov 3: He has been sheltering pigs out of official compulsion. But a Muslim veterinarian in Bihar now finds himself ostracised by friends and family alike as the animal is considered ‘napak’ (impure) in Islam.

So much so that Alam Azad, a senior veterinary officer in Kishanganj district, 300 km from here, now fears that fellow Muslims may not even allow him to go on the Haj pilgrimage to Mecca this year.

“I have been ostracised for giving shelter to pigs. I tried to convince them but failed. No one is ready to understand my predicament,” said Azad, who has kept 107 pigs in a bamboo enclosure outside his official residence for over 45 days to produce them in court as “evidence”.

Azad, who is in his 50s, told IANS he was helpless and upset that neither his Muslims friends nor his own family was ready to understand his plight.

“How can I free the pigs when they are evidence against arrested smugglers? It is my official duty to look after them,” he said.

Azad has been looking after the pigs at his own cost since the time they were confiscated while being smuggled to Nepal Sep 16. He has been spending Rs.500 daily on animal feed and on employees who look after them.

Till date, Azad has spent over Rs.32,000 from his own pocket on the animals. “I have not been paid a single rupee by the district administration,” he said.

“I have no option but to keep them in safe custody and produce them in court,” said Azad.

Official sources said an animal husbandry officer had raided Belwa village in Kishanganj town near the Nepal border and confiscated the pigs that were being taken for sale. The officer said the pigs were being tortured. The animals were confiscated under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. Police accompanying the official also arrested two alleged smugglers.

Sources in the Kishanganj district administration said the police had refused to keep the pigs on the grounds that there was no shelter for them. Local cowshed owners also refused to keep them, fearing they would infect the cows and dirty the place.

Azad is now worried over whether he will be able to catch a flight to Jeddah Nov 11 and go on a Haj pilgrimage.

“Some members of my community have said they will not allow me to go on Haj as I have given shelter to pigs,” he said.

He is now banking on district officials who have promised to help him by arranging another shelter for the pigs.

Dioxin pollution leads to more baby girls: study

Posted by 498A_Crusader on October 20, 2007

TORONTO (Reuters) – More girls than boys are born in some Canadian communities because airborne pollutants called dioxins can alter normal sex ratios, even if the source of the pollution is many kilometers away, researchers say.

Dioxin exposure has been shown elsewhere to lead to both higher cancer rates and the birth of more females.

Researchers at the IntrAmericas Centre for Environment and Health say their findings, released this month, confirm the phenomenon in Canada.

The study also reveals the health risks of living within 25 km (15.5 miles) of sources of pollution — a greater distance than previously thought, they said.

Normally, 51 percent of births are boys and 49 percent are girls. But the ratio was reversed — with as few as 46 males born for every 54 females — in Canadian cities and towns where parents were exposed to pollutants from sources such as oil refineries, paper mills and metal smelters, according to the study.

“If you find an inverted sex ratio, and want to know what causes it, look for sources of dioxin,” said James Argo, a medical geographer who headed the study, which was published in a journal of the American Chemical Society.

“In every one of those cities where those industries are found … there was a higher probability of female births to male births,” Argo said in an interview.

Using birth data and an inventory of pollution sources, the study also concluded that early exposure to dioxins — even at 25 km away from the source — increased the risk of cancer later in life in a group of 20,000 people surveyed during the 1990s.

Previous studies that linked dioxins with cancer and a gender imbalance focused on smaller distances, usually about 5 km, Argo said.

Dioxins are toxic chemicals found in very small amounts in the air, water, soil and some foods.

The large-scale burning of municipal and medical waste is the primary source of dioxins in Canada, but they are also created by fuel and wood burning, electrical power generation, and in the production of iron and steel.

Since more females were born in the 90 communities studied, more breast, uterine, cervical and ovarian cancers were observed among them than other forms of cancer, Argo said.

Men Vs Women (some subtle and some not so) differences

Posted by amitabhohms on October 18, 2007

Handwriting:

Men: To their credit, men do not decorate their penmanship. They just chicken-scratch.

Women: Women use scented, colored stationery and they dot the “i” with circles or hearts. Women use ridiculously large loops in the “b” and “g”. It is a pain to read a note from a woman. Even when she’s dumping you, she will put a smiley face at the end of the note.

Groceries:

Women: A woman makes a list of things she needs, then goes out to the store and buys those things.

Men: A man waits till the only items left in his fridge are half a lime and a beer. Then he goes grocery shopping. He buys everything that looks good. By the time a man reaches the checkout counter, his cart is packed tighter than the Clampett’s car on Beverly Hillbillies. Of course, this will not stop him from going to the express lane.

Relationships:

Women: When a relationship ends, a woman will cry and pour her heart out to her girlfriends, and she will write a poem titled “All Men Are Idiots”. Then she will get on with her life.

Men: A man has a little more trouble letting go. Six months after the break-up, at 3:00 a.m. on a Saturday night, he will call and say, “I just wanted to let you know you ruined my life, and I’ll never forgive you, and I hate you, and you’re a total floozy. But I want you to know that there’s always a chance for us.” This is known as the “I Hate You / I Love You” drunken phone call, that 99% of all men have made at least once. There are community colleges that offer courses to help men get over this need.

Sex:

Women: They prefer 30-40 minutes of foreplay.

Men: They prefer 30-40 seconds of foreplay. Men consider driving back to her place part of the foreplay.

Maturity:

Women: They mature much faster than men. Most 17-year old females can function as adults.

Men: Most 17-year old males are still trading baseball cards and giving each other wedgies after gym class. This is why high school romances rarely work out.

Magazines:

Men: Men’s magazines often feature pictures of naked women. Men are turned on at the sight of a naked woman’s body.

Women: Women’s magazines also feature pictures of naked women. This is because the female body is a beautiful work of art, while the male body is lumpy and hairy and should not be seen by the light of day. Most naked men elicit laughter from women.

Bathrooms:

Men: A man has six items in his bathroom — a toothbrush, shaving cream, razor, a bar of Dial soap, and a towel from the Holiday Inn.

Women: The average number of items in the typical woman’s bathroom is 437. A man cannot identify most of these items.

Shoes:

Women: When preparing for work, a woman will put on a wool suit, then slip on Reebok sneakers. She will carry her dress shoes in a plastic bag from Saks. When a woman gets to work, she will put on her dress shoes. Five minutes later, she will kick them off because her feet are under the desk.

Men: A man will wear the same pair of shoes all day. Let’s not talk about how many days he’ll wear the same socks.

Cats:

Women: Women love cats.

Men: Men say they love cats, but when women aren’t looking, men kick cats.

Children:

Women: A woman knows all about her children. She knows about dentist appointments and soccer games and romances and best friends and favorite foods and secret fears and hopes and dreams.

Men: A man is vaguely aware of some short people living in the house.

Dressing Up:

Women: A woman will dress up to: go shopping, water the plants, empty the garbage, answer the phone, read a book, get the mail.

Men: A man will dress up for: weddings, funerals.

Laundry:

Women: Women do laundry every couple of days.

Men: A man will wear every article of clothing he owns, including his surgical pants (the ones that were hip about eight years ago) before he will do his laundry. When he is finally out of clothes, he will wear a dirty sweatshirt inside out, rent a U-Haul and take his mountain of clothes to the Laundromat. Men always expect to meet beautiful women at the Laundromat. This is a myth perpetuated by reruns of old episodes of “Love American Style.”

Eating Out:

Men: When the check comes, each man will each throw in $20 bills, even though it’s only for $22.50. None of them will have anything smaller, and none will actually admit they want change back.

Women: When the girls get their check, out come the pocket calculators.

Mirrors:

Men: Men are vain and will check themselves out in a mirror.

Women: They are ridiculous; they will check out their reflections in any shiny surface: mirrors, spoons, store windows, bald guys’ heads.

Menopause:

Women: When a woman reaches menopause, she goes through a variety of complicated emotional, psychological, and biological changes. The nature and degree of these changes varies with the individual.

Men: Menopause in a man provokes a uniform reaction – he buys aviator glasses, a snazzy French cap and leather driving gloves, and goes shopping for a Porsche.

The Phone:

Men: Men see the telephone as a communication tool. They use the telephone to send short messages to other people.

Women: A woman can visit her girlfriend for two weeks, and upon returning home, she will call the same friend and they will talk for three hours.

Richard Gere:

Women: Women like Richard Gere because he is sexy in a dangerous way.

Men: Men hate Richard Gere because he reminds them of that slick guy who works at the health club and dates only married women.

Madonna:

Same as above, but reversed. Same reason.

Toys:

Women: Little girls love to play with toys. Then when they reach the age of 11 or 12, they lose interest.

Men: Men never grow out of their toy obsession. As they get older, their toys simply become more expensive, silly and impractical. Examples of men’s toys: little miniature TVs. Car phones. Complicated juicers and blenders. Graphic equalizers. Small robots that serve cocktails on command. Video games. Anything that blinks, beeps, and requires at least 6 “D” batteries to operate.

Cameras:

Men: Men take photography very seriously. They’ll shell out $4000 for state of the art equipment, and build dark rooms and take photography classes.

Women: Women purchase Kodak Instamatics. Of course, women always end up taking better pictures.

Locker Rooms:

Men: In the locker room men talk about three things: money, football, and women. They exaggerate about money, they don’t know football nearly as well as they think they do, and they fabricate stories about women.

Women: They talk about one thing in the locker room – sex. And not in abstract terms, either. They are extremely graphic and technical, and they never lie.

Movies:

Women: Every actress in the history of movies has had to do a nude scene. This is because every movie in the history of movies has been produced by a man.

Men: The only actor who has ever appeared nude in the movies is Richard Gere. This is another reason why men hate him.

Jewelry:

Women: Women look nice when they wear jewelry.

Men: A man can get away with wearing one ring and that’s it. Any more than that and he will look like a lounge singer named Vic.

Conversation:

Men: Men need a good disagreement to get talking. For instance, “Wow, great movie.” or “What are you, nuts? No REAL cop would have an Uzi that size.”

Women: Women, not having this problem, try to initiate conversations with men by saying something agreeable: “That garden by the roadside looks lovely.” “Mm hmm.” Pause. “That was a good restaurant last night, wasn’t it?” “Yeah.” Pause. And so on.

Leg Warmers:

Women: Leg warmers are sexy. A woman, even if she’s walking the dog or doing the dishes, is allowed to wear leg warmers. She can wear them any time she wants.

Men: A man can only wear leg warmers if he is auditioning for the “Gimme the Ball” number in “A Chorus Line.”

Friends:

Women: Women on a girls’ night out talk the whole time.

Men: Men on a boy’s night out say about twenty words all night, most of which are “Pass the Doritos” or “got any more beer?”

Restrooms:

Women: Women use restrooms as social lounges. Women who’ve never met will leave a restroom giggling together like old friends. Women also go to the restroom in packs, at least two women at a time excuse themselves to use the restroom.

Men: Men use restrooms for purely biological reasons. Men in a restrooms will never speak a word to each other. And never in the history of the world has a man excused himself from a restaurant table by saying, “Hey, Tom, I was just about to take a leak. Do you want to join me?”
