AHMEDABAD: She had paid him back in his own coin and had got a cop to shoot him down. After being tricked and spurned by her lover a woman got her beau murdered by hiring killers with the same money that he had paid, to purchase her silence.
Police say that the accused, Chetna Upadhyay, had gone to the extent of scripting the murder of her lover, Sanjay Mistry, 31, exactly like one of the lies he used to dodge her.
The Sola police has solved the mystery of an the murder of Mistry – an entrepreneur. His body was found slumped inside his car near Science City on January 4 with two bullet wounds in his neck and stomach.
He had been shot from point-blank range. The cops have arrested Chetna along with a police constable posted a Shahibaug headquarters, Deepak Khant and another accused Amit Upadhyay. Chetna had an affair with the deceased who was married.
Chetna, said police, had given Rs 2 lakh to the two to kill Mistry. “This was part of the Rs 4 lakh package that Mistry had allegedly given to Chetna to buy her silence on their affair and also to convince her to keep distance,” said police investigators.
“We were clueless in the beginning due to contradictory statements from various people connected with Mistry — his elder brother Bharat, partner Paras, his business rivals and his girlfriend Bhavna — but we got no links about how and why the murder was committed. When inspector VM Jani took over the investigation of the case, he again interrogated the accused.
During questioning Chetna confessed to have killed him. After that, we questioned her and got the links in the case that lead to one clue after another,” said AK Jadeja, deputy commissioner of police, Zone I.
Chetna, a resident of Naroda, claims she came in contact with Mistry in 2004 and got married a year later. It was much later that Chetna learnt that Mistry was already married and that he stays in Sola with his wife and children. Enraged, she cut off all the links and got engaged to a youth called Sunil. But Sanjay persuaded her to stay with him and bought her a flat in Sun City in Bopal on rent. The relation soon soured again and Chetna registered a complaint for domestic violence with Sarkhej police in 2006. Sanjay resorted to out of court settlement with Rs 4 lakh.
“Chetna nursed a grudge against Sanjay. She exacted vengeance with help of her friend Amit Upadhyay, a rickshaw driver. Amit had roped in his school mates — Deepak Khant, a constable with Shahibaug headquarters and Dinesh, resident of Santrampur, a petty criminal. They did a recee for three days before the incident. On January 3 night, they stopped his car at a deserted stretch around 10 pm and then shot him thrice. One missed him but two found mark,” said VM Jani, inspector and investigating officer in the case. Police have yet to lay their hands on Dinesh, who is absconding.
