DCP to authorize 498A Arrests
Delhi : Police chief YS. Dadwal warned of the misuse of the sections of dowry harassment. “From now, arrests under Section 498 A pertaining to dowry harassment would be made only with the permission of a deputy commissioner of police.” he said. To address the complaints of women, a separate police station will be set up, he added. Over 4,400 distress calls were made in 2007, out of which 25 per cent were related to domestic violence, 17.42 per cent cases were about rape and sexual assault.

This is definitely good news. How many police offiers would openly discuss about misuse of 498A? The police are known to use the power of arrest as the main weapon to subdue the husband and his family. We need more of such polic officers who stand up and face the truth.

Please send a letter of appreciation to Police Chief Y S Dadwal, thanking him for this provision. We need to show support for the authorities who are considerate towards the plight of 489a abuse victims.
Dehi guys – Also keep a copy of this newspaper with you so as to avoid arrest if local Police shows up to arrest you/parents without DCP permission.

The specific programme to prevent “CRIMINAL MISUSE OF CRIMINAL LAWS BY THE UNSCUPULOUS CRIMINALS IN INDIA” is
not spelleed out by the Police Commissioner.
He has not said any thing yet, about as to how he want to
deal with abusers and misusers of the laws.
He should be asked to disclose his detailed programme to
prevent continued abuse of 498A, under the Right to Information Act
