Girl alleges rape after affair

MUMBAI: When a 22-year-old beautician approached the Nirmal Nagar police on Thursday alleging that a neighbour and three of his friends had gangraped her, the officers promptly lodged a complaint.
A day later, however, the police learnt that the woman had actually eloped with the neighbour, Ramsingh Chauhan, but was worried that her parents wouldn’t accept her when she broke up with him and returned home. Chauhan had apparently promised to marry her and even pretended having a permanent bank job.
“We registered a complaint of gangrape on the basis of the girl’s initial statement. But, following certain developments, we have to take legal advice and alter sections against the accused accordingly,” inspector (crime) Vasant Zunjhare pointed out.
According to the police, the victim lived with her parents and two sisters at Chamdiwadi. Chauhan, a Bihar native, also stayed in the neighbourhood and used to run errands for a living. A month ago, the two started seeing each other.
On Chauhan’s suggestion, the girl eloped from home on June 26. The couple moved to Goregaon West and started living in a rented tenement at Indira Nagar. They lived in Goregaon between June 26 and July 2 posing as a couple.
“Whenever the girl enquired with Chauhan about his place of work and why he wasn’t attending office, he would fight with her. Their savings soon got exhausted and the couple had to sell off the girl’s gold chain for money,” said Zunjhare. “Chauhan started returning home drunk and the arguments turned bitter. He also hit her on a few occasions and claimed to be involved in affairs with other women. Frustrated, the girl left him and returned to her parents’ place on July 2.”
After the girl claimed that she had been gangraped by Chauhan and his friends at Goregaon, her family took her to the Nirmal Nagar police station and lodged a complaint.
The case was transferred to the Goregaon police station the same day. The police questioned the girl extensively and found that her statements kept changing. They picked up some of Chauhan’s friends and produced them before the girl so that she could say for sure that they were involved in the alleged crime.
The girl later admitted that she had eloped with Chauhan after he assured her that they would get married and claimed that he had a permanent job.
