Jamshedpur, May 31: A 22-year-old woman committed suicide by hanging late last night after her husband allegedly refused to have sex with her.
The victim, Moida Besra, a resident of Ghorabandha, was found hanging from the ceiling with a saree when her husband woke up this morning.
Shocked by her death, the victim’s husband Ranjeet Besra broke down every time someone asked him exactly what happened last night.
“I never thought she would take such a drastic step on my refusing to accept her demands for physical gratification. Even if she had said once how important it was to her, I would have done everything to satisfy her urge,” he said.
He said marital relations between the couple were normal and he had no inkling about anything that was bothering Moida.
Married for the past couple of years, Besra who works on daily wages was in an inebriated condition when he returned home at 10 pm last night after a party with his friends.
“I was not in a mood for any kind of physical gratification. On top of that, I was feeling sleepy. Moida was not ready to relent and kept on requesting me. After listening to her for about 15 minutes, I abused her so that she would stop disturbing me. Then I went off to sleep,” said Besra.
“When I woke up in the morning I received the shock of my life. Moida was hanging from the ceiling beam. Her eyes were wide open as if she was pleading me to save her life,” he said while narrating the incident to the police.
Moida’s body was brought to the forensic science department of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital as it was a case of unnatural death.
Police sources said they do not yet suspect foul play behind the suicide.
A senior psychologist and marriage counsellor Vimla Suri said that it is possible that a person ends his or her life after being refused physical gratification by the partner.
“One is in a very dis- turbed state of mind when one’s partner refuses to satisfy his or her physical needs and a person can take any extreme step under severe mental pressure like that. A person can even commit suicide,” she said.
Suri pointed out that going by her past experience, suicidal tendencies are equal among men and women in the city.
Most people who commit suicide, she said, do so due to the present stressed lifestyle and lack of understanding among urban couples. People end their lives when they feel dejected and there is no one around to give them a patient hearing and solve their problems.
“Actually, people at times forget their responsibility towards their partner and in the heat of the moment a person can end his or her life,” she said.
Most suicides that occur nowadays are because of poor interpersonal relation in the family, she added.
